Maintenance Technician for a Substation

We are seeking to recruit Maintenance Technicians responsible for the maintenance activities of a substation power plant. These maintenance activities include switchgears, power transformers, underground cables, wind turbine fleets, collector networks, auxiliaries, switchgears, transformers, circuit breakers, power switches, and plant inventories.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to health, safety, and environment practices, policies, and procedures, including compliance with work permit and lockout systems.
  • Respond swiftly to system and machinery breakdowns, troubleshooting failures and making on-the-spot repairs or installations.
  • Interpret technical instructions, drawings, diagrams, and process flow charts to troubleshoot faults.
  • Maintain all maintenance records and logs as required.
  • Operate standard power tools and equipment to execute repairs and installation works.
  • Define, prepare, and control work orders and secure spare parts for job completion to ensure efficient use of maintenance resources.
  • Perform predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on plant equipment in a timely manner.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of power generation systems, assess potential issues, and recommend necessary interventions.
  • Test new and existing electrical systems, equipment, and machinery to identify potential problems.
  • Prepare and submit maintenance reports (weekly, monthly, and annual) in consultation with maintenance engineers.
  • Support engineering projects by defining scopes and preparing plans, drawings, and layouts.
  • Provide guidance and direction to less experienced personnel.
  • Promote collaboration and the sharing of best practices within the team.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Higher Diploma in Electrical Power Systems, Control & Instrumentation, or Electro-Mechanical/Mechatronics from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 4- 5 years experience working in a substation as a technician directly supporting maintenance of Equipment like voltage switchgears, power transformers, underground cables.
  • Must have medium to high voltage experience specifically 33/220 kV.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and proficiency in MS Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Switching certification by KPLC and basic understanding of Kenya’s power system grid layout will be an added advantage.
  • Basic understanding of Distribution Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Control (PLC) and SCADA Systems.
