Job Title: Deputy Lead - Imports

Job Purpose:
The Deputy Lead - Imports is responsible for overseeing the importation process, ensuring timely and compliant customs clearance. The role requires expertise in import documentation, regulatory compliance, and coordination with clearing and forwarding agents. Prior experience in a clearing house is mandatory, along with strong knowledge of the ICMS (Integrated Customs Management System) and other customs clearance platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Import Documentation & Compliance
• Manage and verify all import documentation, including Bills of Lading, Commercial Invoices, Packing Lists, Import Declarations, Certificates of Origin, and Permits.
• Ensure compliance with customs regulations, port authorities, and other regulatory bodies.
• Utilize ICMS for customs declarations, tracking import status, and ensuring smooth clearance processes.
• Liaise with government agencies (KRA, KEBS, TRA, and other customs authorities) for import approvals and compliance.
• Maintain updated knowledge of import duty structures, HS codes, trade agreements, and exemptions.
Clearing & Forwarding Operations
• Coordinate with clearing agents to ensure timely customs clearance and delivery of goods.
• Monitor customs duty assessments, tariff classifications, and dispute resolutions.
• Handle valuation queries, exemptions, and bonded warehouse documentation.
• Ensure accurate costing of imported goods, including duties, taxes, and freight charges.
Reporting & Process Improvement
• Prepare reports on import costs, clearance timelines, and regulatory changes.
• Identify opportunities for cost reduction and process efficiency in import operations.
• Ensure accurate record-keeping for audits and regulatory compliance.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Business Administration, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in importation, customs clearance, and logistics.
• Must have worked in a clearing house with hands-on experience in customs procedures.
• Strong knowledge of ICMS is mandatory (proficiency in the Integrated Customs Management System for declarations, tracking, and compliance).
• Expertise in duty exemptions, import licenses, and bonded warehouse operations.
